Tagging Prague

In July this year, I will be accompanying a group of Griffith University students to Prague for three weeks. I know…it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!

I also started research for my Doctorate of Visual Art this year and so I’m hoping to combine the two and instigate a site-specific public art project in Prague. The plan is to use the Internet, and indeed, this website in particular, to manage the project.

My research aims to investigate the idea that people have more of a connection with public art, if they have a degree of control over it. For the {tague} project, members of the public {yes, that means YOU} are invited to request that I ‘tag’ something for them in Prague. I’ll stamp each request onto one of 50 paper tags, tie it to the ‘thing’ when I find it, and photograph it for them. Watch the {tague} photostream and map for the photographs to appear, early July 2009. I also hope to geo-tag each photo to show the actual location of each tague.

So, in order to participate, research the city of Prague a little first to make sure you request something I will be able to find. Then click on the “Request a Tague” menu item and fill in the form. If your tague is accepted, it will appear in the list of Request {tagues} on the right, in the sidebar. I will be in Prague with my students for the first three weeks of July 2009, and this is when the project will take place, so check back regularly during July to see if your tague is successful.

I will also {tague} the city myself in another way, but more about that later…

It’s one per person I’m afraid, but you can hint at your students and give them ideas 🙂

I love it Dominique. Your ideas are wonderful as always.

How long does it take for a tag to appear on the list? I put one in and it said successful, but now I’m not sure since it hasn’t appeared yet…

You are still missed in Melbourne.

What is a Tag?

  • According to the dictionary, tags are small pieces of meta data that are attached to something to indicate its meaning or nature.
  • Tags can also affect the meaning of the 'thing', or indicate how it should be used.
  • A tag is also a simple identifier to help sort, or group information.
